GOAL #2

To help enhance individual capacities and skills that maximize the health and well-being of people infected and affected by and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS.

Strategies in bold are priority strategies. The purpose of priority strategies is to focus the efforts of VHACCC over the next three years. The priority strategies are not intended to replace the other strategies. VHACCC will implement the other strategies as time and resources permit.

OBJECTIVE 2.1

To help enhance the emotional, mental, spiritual and physical capacity of people infected
and affected by and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS

1. Take actions to promote personal health and wellness concepts to health care providers, people infected/affected by HIV/AIDS and target populations  
  • Increased knowledge of how to maximize health status while HIV positive
  • Increased life expectancy and quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS

    2. Take actions to increase research on complementary and alternative therapies for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, and to increase coverage of such therapies under public and private health plans  
    3. Take actions to increase access to individual and group psychosocial counseling for people infected/affected by HIV/AIDS and target populations  
    4. Take actions to promote spiritual, mental and physical capacity of target populations and people infected/affected by HIV/AIDS  

     

    OBJECTIVE 2.2

    To help strengthen healthy coping skills for people infected and affected by and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS

    1. Take actions to improve HIV prevention and personal health education for the general population, target populations and people infected/affected by HIV/AIDS  
  • Increased knowledge of the health risks and impacts of HIV/AIDS among the general population and target populations
  • Decreased rate of HIV infection among the general population and target populations
  • 2. Take action to increase harm reduction education and use of harm reduction practices by target populations, service providers and people infected/affected by HIV/AIDS  
    3. Take actions to increase availability and accessibility of life skills development for target populations and people infected/affected by HIV/AIDS  

     

    OBJECTIVE 2.3

    To enable the healthy development of children and youth infected and affected by and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS

    1. Take actions to increase awareness, education and access to HIV testing, counselling and support for pregnant women  
  • Increased knowledge of the health risks and impacts of HIV/AIDS among the general population and target populations
  • Decreased rate of HIV infection among the general population and target populations
  • 2. Take actions to improve prenatal and postnatal care for women infected/affected by and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS
  • Reported experience of women is positive
  • Increased health outcomes for pregnant women and infants
  • Reduction in spread of HIV from mother to infant at birth
  • Reduction in child apprehension
  • 3. Take actions to ensure that standards and policies on HIV health education, prevention, treatment, care and support are developed and consistently implemented by the Ministry for Children and Families to address the needs of children and youth in its care  
    4. Take actions to ensure that standards and policies on HIV health education, prevention and support are consistently implemented by the Ministry of Education and school boards  
    5. Work with the Ministry of Education and school boards to ensure system-wide HIV education for school trustees, employee groups, teaching staff and students    
    6. Take actions to improve awareness, education and access to HIV testing, counselling and support for all young people, and to augment services and support for young people who are infected/affected by or vulnerable to HIV/AIDS
  • Increased services and support for young gay men, MSM and youth who are street involved and/or participating in the sex trade
  • 7. Take actions to raise awareness of vulnerability of children, youth and young adults to HIV infection due to sexual assault and sexual abuse  
    8. Take actions to ensure HIV-positive children can attend day care, school and recreational facilities  
    9. Take actions to augment ongoing family support for parents and children who are HIV-positive

    OBJECTIVE 2.4

    To help address negative factors associated with the underlying biology or genetic pre-dispositions of people infected and affected by and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS

  • Take actions to ensure prevention, care and support service for individuals infected/affected by or vulnerable to HIV/AIDS due to underlying biology or genetic pre-disposition

  • Increased sensitivity of HIV/AIDS service system to the needs of people whose inherent biology or genetic composition makes them vulnerable to HIV infection
  • Increased access to services by people infected and affected by and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS because of inherent biology or genetic composition
  • Take actions to ensure effective HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support for transgendered persons

  • Take actions to ensure that biological and genetic factors are not barriers to accessing HIV/AIDS care

  • Take actions to ensure effective care, planning and support for infants, children, youth and young adults living with NAS/FAS/FAE
